Carol's Biography

Let’s see. I had a pretty normal childhood, which doesn’t do much to explain who I am now. I’m told I’m normal for a writer, so that’s good. I graduated with a BA in Humanities from Kutztown State College (now University—it’s been awhile) in Pennsylvania.  Since I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, I joined the Air Force and spent twelve years on active duty. Not only did I receive amazing leadership training, I also met the man who became my husband. Tom and I have been married for 26 years and have two sons, Daniel and David. Dan is in grad school and Dave is finishing his senior year of college.

I love to sing in our church choir as well as with “The Offuttaires,” a group of military wives—active duty and retired--who sing at retirement centers and nursing homes. I’m also leading a monthly book study with ladies at our church. This year we are reading “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn. The timing for reading this particular book is very good as one of our members died recently. It has been a comfort that, as Randy says in the opening of the book, we haven’t lost her, we’ve just lost contact with her for awhile.

Earlier this year I became a mentor for Jerry Jenkins’ Christian Writer’s Guild. I love to teach and I’m thoroughly enjoying working with my guild students. The Guild’s mission is to “educate, train, and support writers who desire to promote a biblically based Christian worldview through their writing.”  They accomplish this through two-year writing courses for children through adults as well as the annual conference. The conference last year was awesome and this year Liz Curtis Higgs will be a keynote. Check them out at www.christianwritersguild.com.

When I’m not writing, walking the dogs, or singing, I enjoy reading, gardening, and listening to music— everything from Andrea Bocelli to Toby Keith.

Those of you who’ve visited this site in the past know of my love for the folks and the horses at Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Center (PPTRC) in Colorado Springs. For more information about PPTRC or to learn about a NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) riding center near you, go to PPTRC or NARHA. You can make a difference.

Two years ago Tom and I moved to Nebraska and I’m no longer active with a riding program. But a great story idea is percolating about a patient at such a center. Stay tuned.
